Reasonable, cozy, and friendly

For travelers who want to experience an authentic yet casual Japanese-style inn in Kyoto, Ryokan Shimizu is the place to stay. It is very conveniently located within walking distance of Kyoto Station, which is both the gateway to the city and main subway station and bus terminal for visiting all the major tourist spots around town. The famous Gion district is only 20 minutes by bus from the station.

Guests can find a variety of restaurants as well as 24-hour convenience stores and supermarkets just a short walk away from the inn. Yet, because the inn sits along a quiet alleyway behind Higashi Honganji Temple, it has a surprisingly quiet and peaceful atmosphere.

Learn a bit about Japanese culture

At Ryokan Shimizu, there are opportunities available for you to experience a bit of Japanese culture if you so desire. For example, upon request, one of the inn’s family members can offer a casual private calligraphy workshop. You may also take pictures of yourself in traditional kimono to remember your wonderful time in Kyoto. These are ways we pride ourselves in making guests feel welcome and are all complimentary. It is our hope that such experiences will become wonderful memories from your trip.

Rooms—

Sleep well on a feathery futon in a clean tatami room

All our guest rooms use clean and traditional Japanese-style tatami mats (woven-straw floors). Futon mattresses are laid out at night for a comfortable sleep. All rooms have a private bathroom and a separate toilet room for hygiene and privacy. The entire inn is free Wi-Fi equipped and is now smoke-free, with a limited smoking area available from 6:00 a.m. to midnight outside the building.

Baths—

Large, onsen-style bath for private use

In addition to the private bath and showers in each guest room, we have two large Japanese onsen (hot spring)-style baths, which can be reserved for your family/group's private use. Each day, our staff prepares different types of aromatic baths, using seasonal fruits, flowers or hot spring minerals for use in these baths.

Breakfast—

Healthy Japanese breakfast featuring carefully-selected local vegetables

For those wanting to try an authentic Japanese breakfast, we offer daily menu selections full of fresh, locally grown vegetables carefully chosen by the owner himself and purchased from local farmers and at local markets. Start your day afresh with our healthy breakfast featuring steamed brown rice, miso soup, and local delicacies. Reservations required by the day before.
